Being a young person who shares interests in political and societal platforms can be a blessing and a curse. You are exposed to the good, the bad and the ugly. As a member and the current sitting President of the Sint Maarten Youth Parliament, you are given various opportunities to expand your knowledge in different areas such as public speaking, and parliament procedures. It also gives you the platform educate the public on certain topics from the youth point of view. However, there is one phrase you always here after a public meeting, speech, or presentation. “Yes, why don’t we put them to run the country.” EXQUUUUUZEE ME? That phrase or variations of it always leave a taste of displeasure in my mouth. It sounds like the public wants you to drop everything you’ve planned in your life and speak for them. I get it. The people are desperate. They want something new, something that could work, but if they really wanted something new, the same persons would have not been in power for the last 20 plus years. It comes to a point where it is used as a compliment. Ladies and gentlemen, it is not. Well not to me. The smile that goes with it, especially from politicians themselves, usually hide their true tactics. Everyone is looking for a new puppet to play with. Sorry but not sorry, I am not one to be messed with. Matter of fact, majority of my generation you self proclaimed as the “future leaders” are too blunt and straight forward for the country. Persons would dislike our honesty and transparency and refuse to vote us back in for next elections. Don’t believe me? Just watch. So for those who tend to see me in the streets, don’t ask me if I’m running in the next elections, don’t ask me if I would be the next Prime Minister or President of Parliament in the future or if I’m going to run the country. Please don’t. I am trying to find myself. I don’t have time to listen to your dreams and wishes about me. Stop claiming me as your future leader so you could have a sense of hope. Anyways I cyan run for elections anyways. Meen 21. Make sure to follow us on instagram and twitter @islandgalting for more IslandGalTing updates.
