Feminism, not Another Word For Hating Men

1/12/2018

The Jamaican dancehall singer, Ishwana has a remix to Ed Sheeren’s Shape is You, entitled Equal Rights. The song is quite explicit, but if you listen to it, that is the main definition of Feminism.

Feminism isn’t a movement that was created to bash men. It was created to uplift women. From the beginning of time, the woman was always inferior to man. Men had all the ruling positions where the women were used as wives and to produce more offspring.Nice. Women always had to be poised, respectful and be mindful of how they act, while man can be complete savages to boost their manliness. This lead to women feeling used and different strains of toxic masculinity.

Now many people, especially males, feel that feminism is all about bashing men and truly I give them no wrong. When you have the bootleg, "quite white" type of feminism that hates everyone in mainstream media such as clit on the sidewalk or activists such as Taylor Swift,  it can get overbearing.  However this doesn’t mean you can not do your research. Persons need to understand that living with a vagina in this world is extremely hard.

For us living in the Western Hemisphere and the “developed world”, we have an advantage over those who still heavily practice their cultural norms. Young girls aren’t encouraged to go to school and get an education; they are usually married off at a young age for financial reasons, forced to bear children at a tender age; are human trafficking and still have to work to support their families. Feminism is there  to make these types of problems known to most and push to see how we can help save these females. It is very heartbreaking to see how the world still has such backward ideologies.

So when you hear women say men are trash, we aren’t generally hating on men relationship wise. Those who view it from a relationship stand point just need to reevaluate the type of men they date. When you hear certain folks say men are trash, it is addressing the years of oppression the woman has gone through when it comes to fighting for equality; how toxic masculinity still fuels society and how the everyday life has somewhat become a burden because of restrictions implemented by men.

ARTIYA BRUNO
My government name is Artiya Bruno but I’m affectionately known as ‘Tee’. My 20 years on this planet has been spent between Dominica, the land of my birth, and Anguilla, my second home.

Apart from my regular 9-5, I spend my time developing content and ideas for both my content and my upcoming business ventures. I’ve always been fascinated by YouTubing because of the value it brings to the viewers. I didn’t have an older sister growing up. I stumbled through most of my teen life without direction or instruction, basically winging it. That inspired me to create my channel ‘As Told By Tee’. My aim is to empower and inspire young, black women by giving them a virtual big sister that can provide guidance on the day to day struggles of being a black woman. This initiative is something that is near and dear to my heart. I’ve seen how the world is going and we all need someone to look up to in the face of adversity. It isn’t about the money or even the gratification and self-satisfaction. All I want is to make someone’s life a little easier, even if it’s through something as simple as a video.

RAHUL SHARMA
First Name: Rahul
Last Name: Sharma
Age: 18
Country: St. Maarten
Profession/Skill: Blogger, YouTuber, Creator
What motivated you to start doing what you do:
Creating something, making art, and photography are a few things I am passionate about. My YouTube journey initially started off by me experimenting with my iPhone camera, I decided to step out of my comfort zone and post a video. The response I got from my first video was such a positive one that I decided to continue making more. Furthermore, just like every normal high schooler I made an Instagram page and started posting random pictures. Being fond of photography and editing, I started experimenting taking pictures with my iPhone camera and trying various editing styles. Instagram is a great platform where I am able to display some of my favorite pictures. I often get messages from fellow Instagrammers saying that they love my feed and that it is very aesthetic, this motivates me to continue posting and creating. I also occasionally paint and sketch in my free time.

TANGIE HUGGINGS
Aight so boom! Lollol
I go by the name Tangie. I am 23 years old and I was born and raised on the beautiful island of St. Kitts but presently I reside in tranquil Anguilla.
I am an amateur visual artist, currently focusing on advancing my artistic skills through drawing and painting. Although my reach goes way beyond that, anything that I can get my hands on or wrap my mind around I always welcome the challenge so I’m definitely no stranger to crafts. In recent years I’ve had the privilege to work with internationally known costume designers known as ‘Shidor'. So putting myself in a box will never be an option.
I’ve been doing art since I could firmly hold a crayola crayon, then it was all uphill from there. For me my inspiration is and has always been my mom. I grew up watching her do what I can finally do today. She is definitely my biggest motivator. Art has always been apart of my life, even when I thought I wanted to be a doctor. While attending 6th form I had a heart to heart with myself on a rock and realised, chemistry and I for 10 years ‘issa no’.  So what has always been a hobby I’ve decided to embrace wholeheartedly and pursue into a career. They say if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life, I intend to do just that. My Mantra, ‘ art is my passion, that passion is a way of life'. Art. Passion. Life.

You can find my works on my Instagram page ‘@Artby_Tangie

SADÉ PIPER
Hello,
My name is Sadé Piper and I am 20 years old. Born and raised in the beautiful British Virgin Islands. I am a blogger, writer, and a law student at UWI Cave Hill (Go Blackbirds!).

My blog is entitled Caribbean Black Beauty; formerly “SimplySade”. We at CBB intend to share the experience of a black Caribbean girl who just loves to write. We intend to deal with real life issues, and providing personal commentary on things that uplift or are relatable to our readers. What motivated me to re-launch my blog is because I realize that some of the problems that I may encounter a lot of Caribbean black girls may relate to. The title is relatable and personal because I am Caribbean, I know what it is like to live in the Caribbean, and I am a black girl who until a year or two ago did not fully embrace her black. So it’s an empowering title not just for my readers but for myself. I hope that as my blog grows, I learn a lot about myself through my writing and that my site promotes positivity in a world filled with negativity.

You can view my blogsite by clicking on the link below:

Feel free to contact me through my personal email ([email protected]) or through my blog email ([email protected]).

Thank you.

ANNETTA JACKSON
Name: Annetta Jackson ( The Cotton Tree)
Age: 20
Country: Antigua and Barbuda
Profession: Photographer / Blogger

Motivations: I have always loved telling stories. I’ve written fan fiction, attempted poetry, then found my way to prose and telling stories about what’s happening around me. My love for stories naturally led me to photography. Photos tell stories and hold memories and each memory has something to share. I decided to couple my love for sharing stories with my love for capturing life around me and my blog was formed. It’s an extension of my life and my vision, a creative outlet of sorts. A very intimate outlet for my thoughts of life and a visual scrapbook for all my memories.

ROSHANNA TRIM
Name: Roshanna Trim
Age: 22
Country: Guyana born, Barbados is home

Profession/ Skill: I am a youth advocate (3 years)
What Motivated me: I was fortunate to not become a product of environment however many persons struggle with overcoming their situations and circumstances and I wanted to assist with that. I believe that change is best done for young people by young people with the older generation facilitating and acting as guides. I wanted to make an impact based on my ability rather than focus on my age and I am passionate about creating environments where everyone can reach their fullest potential.

GEORGIA NELSON
My name is Georgia Nelson, but my friends call me Gia. I am 18 years old. I am a native of  the Republic of Guyana; however, I was reared on the island of Sint Maarten (where I currently reside). Cooking and baking are areas which I am very passionate about.

“If yuh cyan cook, when yuh get big you na guh eat,” chanted my Guyanese mother. Every time she was baking fruit cake, kneading bread, or cooking up a hot pot of curry, I was there looking on. I had to learn to cook, because I loved to eat. Her wise council moved me to develop a love for being in the kitchen. I spent a lot of time watching American cooking shows and decided to incorporate my Caribbean flare with what I was learning from television. By the age of 12, I was preparing foods and dishes that my mother had never before made.

DENNIS MC CALL JR.
Name: Dennis Mc Call Jr
Age: 22
Country: St. Kitts & Nevis
Profession/Skill: Youth Activist
Motivation: A wise family member once told me “Jr always bridge the gap between poverty and wealth”. This quote has been my driving force behind bridging the gap between young people and the older generation. The use of young people by governments, schools and non-profit organizations is mere tokenism and it is my goal to change this. Starting from being a youth leader in church & high school to the DEAN & CARICOM Youth Ambassador and to holding leadership positions at the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus. In the wise words of Mahatma Gandhi, “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.”

Name: Aisha Y. Smoorenburg
Nickname:
Aisha Yasmin
Age: 19
Country: Sint Maarten/ Netherlands
Skill: Make-Up Artist

What motivated me:

I see the face as a canvas for art just like any other painting. The art is expressed in colorful combinations that create the most beautiful pieces.  Every person has their own way of expressing themselves in art. Make-up is my art. It is my passion, hobby, and talent as I learn every single day. The different looks that can be created using make-up is infinite. There are no limits that hinder you, and that’s what motivates me every single day. What new creations I will come up with today to perhaps express myself?

Singer

Art has always been in my bloodline and by art, I mean singing, dancing, or even painting. I started singing because I just feel so good doing it. I can’t really explain how it feels but it’s like once I start I can’t stop. Its addicting. I was in multiple singing groups performing just for fun but I have always had a bit of stage fright so I would never actually post any videos of myself singing because I’ve always been afraid of what people would think. Honestly admitting that is pretty hard but I do admit I’m afraid of what people would think about my singing. One thing I can confidently say though is I do love doing it and nothing can ever stop me from doing it. I do want to start posting videos and stuff but I guess I just have to start building the courage to do so. Those who have heard me sing though, like the two beautiful ladies who run this blog, have very positive opinions about my voice and I think that is something that should allow me to become more of a confident person when it comes to my art.

WYNANTE CHARLES
First & Last Name: Wynante Charles aka wynie
Age: 20
Country: Commonwealth of Dominica
Profession/Skill: Writing
What Motivated you to start doing what you do:
I've always loved words for as long as I can remember. From primary school, my mother always had me read anything I came into contact with. I fell in love with the way a writer could sway their audience to feel just about any emotion.
During primary school I was bullied and I channelled my feelings into my writing. I used it as a way to constructively express myself, and over the years it just gradually developed.  My writing is the truest form of my soul spilled onto paper or the pages of my blog

CHEV B

- Beauty/ Natural Hair influencer - YouTube & Instagram
- I started YouTube with the intention of sharing my creativity of hair styling and care for black women. After watching YouTube for years I realized there wasn't a representation of girls like me. I wasn't able to identify with a lot of influencers as if no one had hair like mine, that middle ground between 3c and 4c type hair. This realization pushed me to create my own channel. After publishing my very first video 11 months ago, I have over 125k amazingly supportive subscribers. I also make it a point to be true to me being Jamaican ending every video with "gwan big up unnu self"

AJHERMAE WHITE
My name is Ajhermae White. I'm a 21year old, from Montserrat and I am nail artist.
I gained an interest in nail art when I was 15. I found the process of creating designs on my nails enjoyable and I felt like having a design on my nails made me stand out. Since then I have been able to develop my skills as a nail artist by practicing on myself and others. I love that my art work gets to be worn by clients or by myself. In the near future I hope to become a licensed nail technician and that one day my work will be very outstanding in Montserrat and throughout the Caribbean.

Well I wouldn’t say it’s my profession but I make custom wigs

So what inspired make to make wigs was my natural hair. I was never proud of it growing up so I altered it and damaged it in many ways. as I got older I tried to repair the damage I did by practicing proper hair care . While researching hair care I stumbled on protective styling which is where I learned about how much wigs protect hair. I decided to more research and then I started making wigs for myself. I got asked many time to do wigs for other people till eventually I gave in and by the support of my friends and family I slowly turned it into my own business. Now I make custom wigs locally and hope to go regional very soon.

Passion breathes purpose a motto that was engraved in me by my teacher. I have always heard of the cliché expression that one photo speak a thousand words. As result I started to  use my photography to tell a story. Sometimes words are simply not enough to express how we really feel. I am motivated on helping others expressing their emotions through self portraits. Never be afraid to unleash your emotions. Let the photo tell a story that words can never express.
